NATURE RULES ON THE ISLAND OF CRES

If you are in a search for a beautiful, strongly nature related place for your vacation I deeply recommend you to try your luck on the island of Cres, you won’t be disappointed. Cres is not a strong, crowded tourist place that everybody is hungry to go to, but (and it is a big but!) numerous are for sure going to find many things that will make their departure very hard.

I don’t know where to start when talking about the island of Cres. General details like its size, tourist offer you can find almost anywhere on the Internet, also on one of my pages, but I wanted to share with you some other things that fascinated me personally on Cres.

The island of Cres is, in my opinion, one stunning island, a living example of the nature’s quiet harmony with people sharing each other’s existence and destiny. Just for a record – I am not the only one who thinks so.

The eastern part of a steep eastern coast of the island of Cres is domicile of white-headed eagles. Eagles just make more profound magic of a relationship between man and nature. That part of island Cres is also an ornithology park since the year 1986 and still existing in a good condition.

Northern crests of the island of Cres are practically unreachable, worned out by the wind. In spite to this fact, probably due to the natures will to exist, this northern part of the Cres has got surprisingly large forest (pine, oak, hornbeam) areas. Even climate conditions on the island are not the same on its whole area. Namely, there are noticeable differences among the northern and the southern part of the island. Northern part of the island of Cres has a standard temperature in January between 5 and 6 °C and a yearly rainfall of 900 – 1000 mm, while its southern part has 800 – 900 mm of a rainfall and the temperature 6 – 7 °C.

Because of the exposal of the eastern part of the island to the cold north wind bora, the western part of the island is evidently warmer and the soils are clearly more humid. I can see the logical thinking of the people which inhabited mainly the western part of the island of Cres.

The eastern part the same as the central part are significantly not as much populated.
On the island of Cres, in its central part is situated Vransko Lake. Vransko Lake is a natural pool of extremely clean water. It reaches its bottom on 68 metres below the level of the sea and its surface is usually around 13 metres above the sea level. It contains around 200 million cubic metres of water and is the major supply of water for two islands – Cres and Mali Losinj.
